How to Buy an Elliptical Trainer

By | September 8, 2017

Thinking of buying an elliptical machine? It’s a big purchase so you’ll want to do some research to make sure you find the right one for you and whoever else in your household may be using it. There are a few things you will need to consider before making your final decision.

First and foremost before buying a large exercise machine like this you want to make sure you like the workout you receive from it well enough to make this kind of commitment. You want it to be part of an exercise routine you will enjoy long term. Make sure it gives you the type of exercise you want and works the muscle groups you want it to. Probably the best way to test different exercise machines is go the the gym regularly until you feel you’ve tested a good variety and have found what you like best. If you don’t normally go to the gym think of getting a one month membership. It’s worth this small fee to find the right type of exercise machine.

If you’ve tried different machines and you know you want an elliptical trainer remember that home models will be a little different than the models at the gym unless you buy a high end elliptical. Some high end ellipticals made for home use are similar to ones you will find in a gym but unfortunately they can be pretty expensive — more than most people can afford or even more than they need. Home models don’t get the consistent, heavy use so they are typically made a little differently.

Elliptical trainers can range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars. Unless you are a serious athlete you probably won’t need to go with a top notch trainer, but you will still want one that has a solid build. The problem with the lowest end models is most aren’t built to last. Many don’t have a smooth feel and they may require more maintenance. If you don’t like the feel of the unit or if it requires too much maintenance you probably won’t end up using it much which completely defeats the purpose of having one at home.

Most people will want a mid-range elliptical machine. A good mid-range machine will cost around $ 1,000 to $ 1,500. This may sound like a lot but remember it is an investment. You want to get something you will enjoy using for a long time. You also want to make sure it has the features you need to keep the workout diversified and work a variety of muscle groups. It’s good to look at the customer service record of the different companies also, so you know how helpful they may be if you have a problem.
